What is autism?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication and interaction, and history of restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour or interests. Differences in sensory processing are also frequently observed, with heightened or reduced sensitivity to different sensory input, or interest in certain sensory aspects of the environment.
Symptoms are present from the early developmental period; however, they may not fully manifest until social demands increase or they may be masked by learned strategies later in life.
Autism represents a natural variation of the human experience and exists on a spectrum, with each individual presenting with their unique strengths and challenges. Support needs can vary significantly between individuals, as well as over time.
