What is autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication and interaction, and history of restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour or interests. Differences in sensory processing are also frequently observed, with heightened or reduced sensitivity to different sensory input, or interest in certain sensory aspects of the environment.

Symptoms are present from the early developmental period; however, they may not fully manifest until social demands increase or they may be masked by learned strategies later in life.

Autism represents a natural variation of the human experience and exists on a spectrum, with each individual presenting with their unique strengths and challenges. Support needs can vary significantly between individuals, as well as over time.

Why consider an autism assessment?

An autism assessment can provide diagnostic clarity and open the door for individualized supports.

  • → In BC, children ages 6 -18 who are diagnosed with autism are eligible for up to $6,000 per year in funding which can go towards individualized supports.
  • → School districts and independent school authorities are also eligible to receive funding to provide individualized supports in the classroom setting.
A health care provider can help guide whether an ASD assessment may be indicated based your youth’s presentation.

How is an assessment obtained?

Publicly funded autism assessments are provided by the BC Autism Assessment Network (BCAAN) for youth up to age 19. A referral from a health care provider is required, and assessments are completed at different regional sites.

In Prince George, autism assessments are completed through the Northern Health Assessment Network (NHAN) and approximate wait times for assessment have increased to 3-4 years.

Private pay autism assessments are an alternative option and often have shorter wait times. River View Clinic Ltd offers private autism assessments for youth ages 10-19 with developed language skills.
